Japan is well known for its amazing beauty products for women. But only those in the know are aware of how awesome Japanese hair styling products for men are. Here is just one example of a raving review of Japanese hair grease by a hair product blogger. We’ve also read somewhere that Christian Ronald maybe using Gatsby’s made in Japan styling gel for his hair. Japanese Amazing Hair Styling Products for Men.

We’ve asked a few Japanese hairdressers in Tokyo their opinion about Japan’s amazing hair styling products – for men! More specifically, what kind of hair products would give us a perfect look that will last all day. Here are some of their recommendations.

GATSBY

Unlike salon-only products (such as Nakano), Gatsby is available at stores but their products are just as good, says our hairdresser. Try either the Super Hard Styling Gel or Moving Rubber Wax, and finish it up with the Super Hard Set and Keep Spray to create the maximum stronghold.

The most popular jel by Gatsby at our store is GATSBY Styling Gel Super Hard for Men (60g or 200g). It contains subtle citrus scent and the type of vitamin ingredient that protects hair from heat and static electricity. Also quite popular is the Gatsby Moving Rubber series. You can choose from their seven different types of wax according to the hardness and effect you desire. Click on the icons below and each product page has a video introduction on how to use Gatsby Moving Rubber.

GATSBY Styling Gel Super Hard - Handy Type 60g GATSBY Moving Rubber Loose Shuffle 80g GATSBY Moving Rubber Grunge Mat 80g GATSBY Moving Rubber Spiky Edge 80g GATSBY Moving Rubber Wild Shake 80g GATSBY Moving Rubber Wax Air Rise 80g Gatsby Moving Rubber Cool Wet 80g GATSBY Moving Rubber Multi Form 80g

The most popular Gatsby Moving Rubber Hair Wax for Men at our store is Spiky Edge, which is the hardest wax of the series. Its excellent holding power keeps hair spiked and in place so you can move through your day with effortless style. Spiky Edge is designed to enhance movement even in short hair. Recommended for very short to short hair. There are smaller versions of each Moving Rubber, too, which you can take to work or school in your bag. Don’t leave home without Gatsby!

SHISEIDO

Shiseido’s UNO also gives you a variety of looks and holds. UNO Fiber Neo Hold King is highly recommended.

NAKANO

Overall, Nakano is the most highly recommended  brand by our hairdresser friend. Unlike the products above, Nakano’s hairstyling products are available only at beauty salons. However, you may be able to find them sometimes at stores in Tokyo if you are lucky, but apparently it’s very hard to find outside the metropolitan. Those living outside Tokyo are apparently ordering online. Nakano’s Styling Wax ranges from No. 1 to No. 7 in order of strength.

Being beautiful is one of the top priorities for millions of individuals around the world. But consumers who want to be beautiful and careful of their skin at the same time tend to choose Japanese cosmetics. They have earned the trust of domestic as well as international customers, and today, few would ask, “What’s Shiseido?” Sure, Japanese beauty products are often pricier than Chinese or Korean cosmetics. But you know that cheap products could be harmful and damages can be permanent. What’s more important? 5 Best Places to Buy Japanese Cosmetics, Makeup and Beauty Products.

For those lucky enough to be heading to the land of SK-II, Shiseido, FANCL, Kao and Kanebo, we’ve put together 5 best places to buy Japanese cosmetics. If you consider yourself as shopaholic for Japanese beauty products, be warned – there is no stopping once you are in any of the best 5 places below!

No. 5 Drug Stores

5 Best Places to Buy Japanese Beauty Products

Japanese Drug Stores

Japanese drug stores are nothing like those in your own country. They are more like, hm, a theme park with millions of drugs, beauty cosmetics, accessories, clothes, bath products, health & diet food, energy drinks, sanitary goods and more.

Major chain drug stores include: Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Seijo Kokokara Fine, Tsuruha and Sugi Drug Store. There you will never run out of beauty products to buy in Japan. Btw, many of them in major cities are duty-free, so take your passport with you when shopping at drug stores.

No. 4 Convenience Stores

If you have little time left to buy Japanese beauty products, convenience stores will come to save you from your shopping disaster. Locally called “Convini”, Japanese convenience stores are literally everywhere from super remote areas to airports, and never ever underestimate convini.

Not only do they have regular Japanese beauty and cosmetic products, but they also produce their own brands as well as products in collaboration with major Japanese cosmetic brands.

BOTANICAL FORCE BY SEVEN ELEVEN AND FANCL

BOTANICAL FORCE BY SEVEN ELEVEN AND FANCL

For example, Seven Eleven has its own brand, ParaDO, as well as collaboration beauty and skincare products with FANCL, Botanical Force. mfc is a beauty cosmetics series produced by Kanebo exclusively for Family Mart, which also has an exclusive rights to sell MUJI products including their cosmetics.

So don’t panic even if you don’t have time to shop anywhere else – Japanese convini will always be there for you.

No. 3 Discount Stores

ASAKUSA DON QUIXOTE

ASAKUSA DON QUIXOTE

Another great place to buy Japanese cosmetics are discount stores. The most famous in Japan is Don Quixote, or locally called Donki. They are pretty much everywhere in major and not so major cities in Japan, including Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ikebukuro, Shibuya and Yokohama. It’s easy to shop at Donki as they often have multilingual signs, explaining each product. Each shop has different discounted items, so check out a few different shops if you have time.

Same as drug stores above, Donki shops in major touristy areas are duty-free. For electric products, brand goods, and watches and jewelries, purchase over 10,001 yen is duty-free. For consumable goods such as food, beverages, drugs and cosmetics, purchase over 5,001 yen becomes duty-free.

The other excellent discount shop to buy Japanese cosmetics from is Daiso. While some cosmetic items are made in Japan, most of Daiso products are designed by and produced for Daiso overseas. Also, it’s a 100 yen shop after all, so they don’t carry upmarket cosmetics for high end customers. If you are after 100 yen fake eyelashes or black charcoal facial mask made in China, Daiso is the place.

No. 2 Department Stores

5 Best Places to Buy Japanese Beauty Products

Isetan Shinjuku Store

If you are looking for the latest models of high quality cosmetics, and expect the five star customer service, then head to Isetan, Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya, Matsuzakaya and Matsuya. Slightly lesser status, but still extremely sophisticated customer service can be found at Sogo, Keio, Odakyu, Tokyu, LaLaport and Prince PePe. You’ll find the first floor of these department stores dedicated to top end Japanese and international cosmetics.

Shinjuku Isetan is the most exclusive and popular department stores in the entire country. So hit Shinjuku Isetan if you can at all cost, and try Shinjuku Takashimaya afterwards. Shopping Japanese cosmetics at department stores in the exclusive Ginza district of Tokyo is also an exhilarating experience. Ginza Mitsukoshi and Matsuya are perfect places to get pampered in a Ginza style.

No. 1 Online Shops

Takaski, Made in Japan only products

Takaski, Made in Japan only products

If you are not going to travel to the land of Shiseido anytime soon, or forgot to buy certain Japanese beauty products, online shops are only one click away. There are many cosmetics online shops that sell Japanese beauty products, and we also have a variety of Japanese beauty and skincare products:-)

We only sell made in Japan cosmetics and skincare products, and if you don’t see what you are looking for at our shop, we’ll be more than happy to go and look for you!

The post 10 Must-Have Best Japanese Seasonings and Sauces at Home appeared first on TAKASKI.COM.

You’ve been to Japan and ate all the delicious food. While trying okonomiyaki, sushi, tonkatsu, nabe hot pot and just simple sandwiches from convenience stores, you start wondering, “What’s in this?”, “What’s this source?” or “How do they make this so delicious?” It is the black sauce they give you for your tonkatsu that you want to buy before going home, but you have no idea where to look.

I know your pain. Even I, a Japanese native, have problem finding the right condiments. And I always get overwhelmed when I get to that section for sauces and seasonings at supermarkets. There is such a vast range of basic seasonings and sauces that you’ll never know which sauce is for what.

But don’t worry. Below, I’ve put together a list of 10 basic Japanese sauces and seasonings for those new to Japanese cooking. Have the list ready when you hit a supermarket in Japan or a Japanese glossary shop in your country.

No.10 Cooking Sake

In any Washoku (Japanese cooking) you have had, there is almost always cooking sake or Ryorishu in it. You can’t really substitute cooking sake with other types of alcohol, so add this to your shopping cart when you go shopping.

Nikko Cedar Masu Sake Cup - 2011 Tochigi Good Design Award Winner

Japanese Cooking Sake

No.9 Shichimi/Ichimi Chilli Powder

Shichimi or any type of Japanese chili powder isn’t really as spicy as other condiments, but it is the fragrance that makes your Japanese dishes perfect. Shichimi can be added to all types of noodles and dishes, such as udon, soba, and all sorts of nabe hot pots. My personal favourite is Yawataya Isogoro’s series.

Yawataya Isogoro Shichimi Togarashi

Yawataya Isogoro Shichimi Togarashi

No.8 Ponzu Sauce

Ponzu is made with soy sauce and vinegar. Sounds simple, right? But Mitsukan, the most famous condiment maker in Japan, makes amazing ponzu with, of course, their secret recipe. It’s the black sauce you’ve been served when you had a hot pot in Japan.

If you are on a diet, Ponzu sauce is a great friend. I normally steam vegetables and meat and dip them in ponzu. It’s super refreshing and not oily at all.

Asahi Yuzu Ponzu for Grilled Fish Made in Japan

Asahi Yuzu Ponzu

No.7 Kombucha

Luckily I have several professional chef friends in Japan. I asked them what it is that non-professionals like myself can do to make our dishes better. They all told me to add a pinch of kombucha to your broth or pasta sauce! Normally, you’d think kombucha is a tea, but for restaurant chefs, it’s a magic condiment.

Kombucha is not only a secret weapon in your kitchen, but it’s a super healthy food, too.

No.6 Sushi Vinegar and Rice Vinegar

Japanese rice vinegar is a must-have in your kitchen if you are trying to get into Japanese cooking. You can use rice vinegar to prepare sushi rice, but you can also purchase professional made sushi vinegar available both in liquid and powder.

No.5 Mirin

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t know what mirin was until I started cooking extensively at home in my 30s. I was adding mirin to all types of Japanese dishes at home, as I was told that mirin made them delicious and look good (mirin apparently gives that shiny look). Mirin is like cooking wine, a combination of sake and sugar. It’s not overly sweet, though, so it’s perfectly harmless even if you are on a diet.

No.4 Miso Soy Bean Paste

Miso has become a global citizen. So probably I don’t need to explain what it is. The basic use of miso is to make miso soup, but you can also use miso to cook fish, vegetables and meat, or add miso to hot pots and soba and udon soup. I also make miso hummus or dipping sauce and even miso soy milk shakes at home!

No.3 Wasabi

Remember the fragrance, color, and taste of wasabi? It’s one of the most elegant condiment in the world. It’s not only that reason why Japanese have eaten wasabi for centuries. Wasabi helps improve your immune system, cleans your system and hence helps prevent all kinds of illness and diseases. I try to buy fresh wasabi and grate it at home whenever I can, but there are always a few tubes of wasabi in my fridge for everyday use.

No.2 Japanese Mayonnaise Sauce

I used to have Japanese mayonnaise in a shared kitchen at work all the time when I lived in Sydney, Australia. As I added a generous amount of mayonnaise to my sandwiches, my colleagues curiously looked at me and asked, “What’s this?” I let them try and they were all hooked, saying “I never had mayonnaise like this before!”. I used to buy Japanese mayonnaise for myself and my colleagues from Japanese grocery shops in Australia, as they didn’t know where to get them from.

The most popular Japanese mayonnaise is Kewpie, who also makes all sorts of other condiments in Japan. But if you are visiting Japan soon, you can also try other types of mayonnaise and take them home.

No.1 Shoyu Soy Sauce

Shoyu is the rock of all Japanese cuisine. Sadly it’s difficult to get good quality shoyu overseas. If you think all shoyu taste the same, you are missing out big time:-( I urge you to visit supermarkets while in Japan and give yourself a good bottle of shoyu before flying home. Better yet, if you are going to visit countryside in Japan, ask for shops that make shoyu by a traditional method. Their soy sauce will have a deeper umami taste than mass produced soy sauce.

February 2018 – Takaski is happy to announce the launch of Japanese tea shop “OCHASKI”. ‘Ocha’ means ‘tea’ and ‘ski’ means ‘I like’ in Japanese. All Ochaski’s products are sourced from family-run tea growers in Japan and they are thus 100% traceable within Japan.

Ochaski has began with eight different types of Japanese tea. These tea leaves were selected on the basis of their quality and, in particular, rarity. After all, there are millions of tea out there and we wanted to be unique and different.

OCHASKI KYOMA Kyoto Organic Matcha Made in Japan OCHASKI YASOO Wild Grass Bancha Green Tea Made in Japan OCHASKI TAMA Organic Kyoto Gyokuro Green Tea Made in Japan OCHASKI KYOHO Organic Roasted Hojicha Green Te a Made in Japan OCHASKI SUMI Charcoal Roasted Sencha Green Tea Made in Japan OCHASKI ISHI Three-Year Bancha Green Tea Made in Japan OCHASKI GENMA Premium Genmaicha Green Tea Made in Japan OCHASKI TENKU Premium Sencha Tea Made in Japan

So far, Ochaski’s tea leaves come from Shizuoka and Kyoto prefectures, two major teas of tea production. More regions such as Kagoshima, Mie and Saitama will be added soon. Ochaski’s tea is available at Takaski online shop, which sells only made in Japan products. So it is fitting that Ochaski’s tea as well as the tea cans and packaging are also all made in the country. The 73 year-old Nitto Seikan in Shizuoka produces Ochaski’s white and silver tea cans and black gift boxes.

Why a Japanese tea shop?

Of all things that are made in Japan, why would Takaski want to open a new Japanese tea shop, particularly when there are so many tea brands out there already? The answer is very simple – we simply love Japanese green tea, health and beauty benefits of it and the people who grow them. There are all types of benefits that can be had by just a cup of tea per day. After all, it’s very hard to live happily and meaningfully when you don’t have good health. And beauty without health is somewhat not so fulfilling.

Tea that is really made in Japan

We have known for many years that many of the “Japanese tea” sold overseas is not really made in Japan. Somehow there is a misconception that all green tea is Japanese, which is not the case.

Ochaski can tin green tea free tea bags made in Japan

Ochaski Tea Packaging Can 100% Made in Japan

We’ve also know for many years that Japanese tea growers take pride in producing healthy tea leaves. All year round, they take painstaking care, knowing all too well that their leaves will be consumed by you and have impact on your health.

This pride is often more profound among smaller tea growers. There are hundreds of small family-run tea growers in Japan and many of them have been making tea, often in harsh environment, for generations.
Many small farms provide tea leaves to big tea corporations, whose names you might have heard. But there are some small-sized growers who reject mass-production, and instead choose to remain independent and focus on the quality of tea that has been promised by their ancestors. Ochaski’s tea leaves come from these types of farmers.

Ochaski launch special – Free tea sample for all Takaski’s customers

Takaski is giving away Ochaski’s free sample to all customers who purchase in February 2018. We hope that Ochaski’s Japanese tea can be an opportunity for our customers to learn about the benefits of Japanese tea. Also, we really want our customers to try our Japanese food and snacks with our Japanese tea!

Established in Tokyo, Ochaski is a nihon-cha specialist, offering premium Japanese tea to tea lovers around the globe. All Ochaski’s tea products are single-sourced from Japanese family-run tea growers only. They are thus 100% traceable. Ochaski’s collection of tea begins with a conversation with tea growers. We visit their farms and ask how they grow and harvest their tea before making the tea available online to our customers. It is not only Ochaski’s tea that is made in Japan – our tea containers, bags and wrapping materials are also made right here in Japan. Green tea has a long history in Japan – it’s been part and parcel of Japanese healthy and calm lifestyle. Ochaski is dedicated to helping our customers achieve better health, more happiness and calmness in their lives through the delivery of quality Japanese tea.

Have you seen Netflix’s Street Food” featuring a street food vendor, “Toyo? If you haven’t, take a look. After watching it, you’ll want to try yatai food in Japan. Yatai is a Japanese word for street food vendors. Indeed street food has been part and parcel of Japanese culture.

But, while watching Street Food, I realized that I don’t really eat street food in Japan any more. I loved it in the past. In the 70’s and 80’s, Japanese street food was more affordable and venders were everywhere. It made sense to eat on the street than dining at a restaurant. Street food was cheap, quick and available everywhere.

Now street food in Japan has become quite expensive. Elsewhere in the world, particularly in Southeast Asia, it’s cheaper to eat street food than going to a restaurant. This is not the case in Japan.

Depending on the type of food you are planning to eat, restaurants can be cheaper, and often more delicious (and nutritious and hygienic) than yatai’s street food. For instance, a bowl of ramen at a yatai costs anywhere between 600 yen to 900 yen. My favorite ramen shop, Seiya, offers an amazing tonkotsu ramen for 500 yen.

But if you are coming to Japan for the first time, street food is something you should definitely try (at least once). It’s fun and not so hard to find in most big cities. And the good news is, if you like them, you can always try cooking them at home. Surprisingly, you don’t really need a whole lot of ingredients or cooking knowledge to recreate Japanese street food at home.

Here are three Japanese street food you could try while visiting Japan:

Top 3 Japanese Street Food

1 Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き)

Okonomiyaki is probably one of the most beloved yatai food in Japan. It is a savory version of pancake, often made with flour, eggs, shredded cabbage, meat or seafood with a variety of condiments. There are many different styles of okonomiyaki, but the most representatives are Osaka, Hiroshima and Tokyo styles.

While the number of yatai is on decline in Japan, you can almost always find okonomiyaki yatai at any festivals across Japan. The price ranges from 600 to 800yen and it’s kind of fun to wash them cook okonomiyaki on the large hot teppan.

Looks good? But not coming to Japan anytime soon? Good news here – you can easily cook okonomiyaki at home. If you are looking for authentic made-in-Japan okonomiyaki ingredients, have a look at them.

2 Oden (おでん)

I don’t really understand why, but oden hasn’t really become that popular overseas yet. Oden is a very popular winter food in Japan, consisting several ingredients such as vegetables, tofu, eggs, fishcakes, konjac, seafood and meat cooked stewed in a flavoured dashi broth. In Japan, it’s one of the cheapest and healthiest street food, and no Japanese spends an entire winter without ever eating oden. Karashi, Japanese yellow mustard, is a typical condiment.

Typical ingredients include:

  • Daikon – Horse radish
  • Tamago – boiled eggs
  • Konjac – konjac potato
  • Hanpen – white, flat fish cake
  • Chikuwabu – flour paste cake
  • Atsuage – deep fried tofu
  • Jagaimo – potato

Today, oden is most commonly purchased from convenience stores during winter in Japan. At the same time, oden is still widely available all year-round at yatai and restaurants, too. You can buy oden from one piece, such as fishcake, which can be as cheap as 100 yen.

Oden is easy to cook at home. All you need is oden broth stock and your favourite ingredients such as vegetables and tofu. You can get your oden broth and karashi from Takaski all year round.

3 Ramen (ラーメン・らーめん・拉麺)

Finally, ramen, although I don’t think it needs an explanation. Ramen has become one of the most popular Japanese food in the world and it is indeed everywhere here. But street ramen venders have become a rarity, due to various regulations that have become stricter over the years.

Yatai ramen makes me nostalgic. When I was a child growing up in Yokohama in the 70s and 80s, I often had what we call “Yonaki (‘night cry’) ramen”. It was a yatai on the wheels that comes around your neighbourhood at night, as the yatai master would play a recorded ‘charumera‘ tune thorough the speaker. My parents would run out of the house with empty bowls, asking the vendor to stop in front of our house and cook ramen. It took him only a few minutes to prepare Tokyo ramen (shoyu based broth) at the back of his truck, and it was something like 300 – 400 per bowl of ramen.

Japanese Ramen

Unfortunately, this type of charumera yonaki ramen doing the rounds is almost non-existent, due, again, to the regulations getting stricter. But, you do find some ramen-serving yatai at train stations in major cities in Japan today. You won’t have much problem finding them in Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture.

If you wish to cook ramen back home, make sure to visit supermarkets in Japan and get yourself a plenty of supply before heading home. If you have run out of your supply, you can always order Japanese ramen from Takaski.

Do you want to live for 100 years? Your answer is probably, “Yes, if I’m healthy.” No one wants to be ill or suffer from pain, particularly in our old age.

According to BBC, one city in the US is making a firm commitment to helping its residents live long and healthy for 100 years. And it is Naples in Florida, California.

The city is making healthy living an ‘unavoidable’ choice for its residents. They are encouraging schools to let children exercise before lessons. Also the city is redesigning their old roads, making it easy for people to cycle and walk. Supermarkets are being urged to offer fresh food, while restaurants offer healthier menu.

Naples are implementing all these changes by learning lessons from parts of the world where people live the longest. The city is emulating lifestyle of five cities where high numbers of residents live the longest. And yes, you guessed it right, Okinawa in Japan was selected as one of them.

Okinawa – One of the best examples of healthy lifestyle

Okinawa is made up with more than 150 islands in the East China Sea between Taiwan and Japan’s mainland. The population of 138,431, and most of its residents are free from Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, depression and cancer.
Sure, Okinawa’s warm climate helps, but what else are the secrets of such happy longevity? Research shows that it is the well-balanced Okinawan lifestyle that helps live healthy and for a long time. Here is the list of 10 lifestyle choices that can be implemented by our viewers.

  • Locally Grown Organic Vegetables
  • Meals are based on vegetables (80%), seafood (20%) and sometimes pork-based dishes.
  • Large intake of “Goya” or bitter gourd
  • Hara Hachibunme – eat till you are 80% full
  • Daily exercise – Taichi, Okinawan Kenpo, dance, yoga etc.
  • “She’ll be right” stress-free attitude
  • Involvement in local community
  • Permanent search for Ikigai – reason for living or raison d’etre (in Okinawa, retirement is not a cherished concept
  • Okinawan music – dance, shamisen Japanese guitar
  • Local medicine and cures preferred – Japanese kampo or Japanese herbal medicine such as ukon actively taken

Where to start your Okinawan lifestyle?

Many people in Okinawa have their own garden, where they grow their own vegetables. They are also surrounded by the ocean, so seafood is abundant. If you are not so lucky environmentally, you could try some of the items below:

  • Goya tea – it is a bitter gourd based tea made up with 11 types of ingredients among other healthy Japanese healing herbs.
  • Mozuku soup – Made with mozuku from Okinawa Prefecture. Great afternoon snack. Yuzu flavour and based on katsuo stock.
  • Okinawan Brown Sugar – Made with sugarcane and full of zinc, magnesium, calcium, riboflavin, folic acid and other Japanese herbal remedies.
  • Ukon herbal supplement – perfect hangover cure based on ukon or turmeric (a type of ginger) is one of best Japanese herbal supplements.

Visit Okinawa and be inspired

The city of Naples actually visited Okinawa and spent some time to learn about their lifestyle. Perhaps you can do the same! There are many airlines flying to Okinawa from Tokyo and Osaka.

Remember, though. Okinawa is the mainland, but it is in face made up with many islands. If you’d like to see more traditional lifestyle, it’s best to visit smaller islands. Takaski’s favorites are Miyako and Ishigaki. Most major airlines fly to both islands directly from Tokyo, though they are quite pricey. If you have a limited budget, ANA’s budget airline Vanila Air flies to Ishigaki directly.

You are visiting Japan soon and want to try a few types of good Japanese food. There are so many blog posts and YouTube videos about what to eat in Japan out there, that you are totally lost and do not know which ones to try. You say to yourself, “I know sushi already and I just want to know a few other must-try Japanese food!”  I hear you.

When you come to Japan, you’d want to avoid “Food for tourists”, and instead, you want to eat what locals eat.

So here is our top 5 good Japanese food you should try and won’t regret doing so while traveling in Japan. As the title suggests, it’s a totally biased ranking of Japanese food by me, a 47-year-old native Japanese who grew up in Yokohama and Tokyo. These are top 5 Japanese food that my Japanese friends and I eat all the time. Disclaimer: No fancy food or restaurants are listed here – I’ll definitely cover that in near future, but this post is all about delicious/cheap Japanese food locals eat!

No. 5: Onigiri

Onigiri is as traditional as it gets – it’s a triangle rice ball with different types of fillings inside and Japanese have cherished this simple good Japanese food for centuries. Onigiri is also a big business in Japan – believe it or not, every year a ranking of popular onigiri fillings come out. In 2019, the most popular filling was tsuna mayonnaise, followed by grilled salmon and umeboshi (pickled plum – very sour).

Where to buy/eat onigiri

It is so popular that you can get onigiri from anywhere. As it’s normally individually wrapped, you can buy a few, put them in your bag and eat them on the go. Or simply visit convenience stores when you get hungry. There are a number of high-end onigiri shops, too. Try ‘depachika’, or a basement food section at major department stores, such as Isetan and Takashimaya, and you’ll find a high quality (i.e. expensive) onigiri shops. Well, onigiri from convenience stores and super markets are cheap and delicious, but some Japanese are concerned with preservatives in them. If you are one of these discerning customers, try the high-end onigiri shops.

Japanese Seaweed Nori Onigiri

No. 4: Oden

Oden is an extremely popular winter food in Japan. Personally, it’s one of the best traditional Japanese food Japan has to offer, and if you are on a diet or health conscious, Oden is it for you. It consists of several ingredients such as vegetables, tofu, eggs, fishcakes, konjac, seafood and meat cooked stewed in a flavoured dashi broth. In Japan, it’s one of the cheapest and healthiest street food, and no Japanese spends an entire winter without ever eating oden. Karashi, Japanese yellow mustard, is a typical condiment.

Where to eat Oden:

You can get take-away Oden from any convenience stores in Japan (and you know they are everywhere). Personally, Seven Eleven offers the best ones, and if you fancy more sophisticated Oden, just google on oden in Japan and you’ll see hundreds of high-end oden restaurants.

S&B Oden Soup Mix 6 Servings

S&B Oden Soup Mix 6 Servings

No. 3: Yakiniku

Yakiniku is Japanese BBQ. Obviously it originally comes from Korean BBQ, but it’s so different from the Korean version that it’s become one of the most popular food Japan has to offer. Unlike in Korea, you are going to cook yakiniku at your own table by yourself, and I can gruntee you that you’ll have a lot of fun doing it:-)

Where to eat yakiniku

Many yakiniku chain restaurants, such as Anrakutei, Gyukaku, Yakiniku King, Gyushige, Sutamina Taro and so on, offer all-you-can-eat deals (tabehodai) anywhere from 1980yen. Non-all-you-can-eat yakiniku restaurants are rather pricy, although they normally offer much better quality meat.

If you have one evening free in Tokyo, you must try Min Min. Min Min’s yakiniku is out of this world, super delicious and chea. It’s totally not on the radar of foreign visitors because all Min Min shops are located in western Tokyo. Min Min is one of those legendary restaurants that locals know:-)

Kichijoji boasts many yakitori restaurants!

Japanese Yakitori

No. 2: Teishoku

Never heard from Teishoku? Don’t worry, it just refers to a set menu. Teishoku is one of Japanese traditional serving formats. You pick a main dish, such as tonkatsu, and make it a ‘teishoku’, then you’ll receive the tonkatsu and a whole small dishes, such as a bowl of rice, miso soup, pickles and so on, all on a tray. Teishoku is almost always relatively cheap, helping you with your wallet when traveling in Japan.

Where to eat teishoku

My personal recommendation is definitely Otoya. It’s a chain restaurant mainly serving Japanese food in a teishoku format. They have a few shops overseas, too, in countries such as the US, Thailand and Taiwan. While in Japan, try Kaasan teishoku and/or Chicken miso katsu teishoku, which are so delicious you’ll want to cry. When I go to Harajuku where food is ridiculously expensive, Otoya is my No.1 choice!

No. 1: Soba and Udon

Soba and udon are two different types of traditional Japanese noodles. Some Japanese people like soba better and others prefer udon, so you should try them both and see which type you prefer. I’m on a diet, so I usually go for soba, less calories, than udon.

Where to eat soba

If you go to a proper soba or udon shop, expect to pay from 800yen to 3000yen. I love handmade soba at Tanzaburo in Nishi-Tama, Tokyo, but oh, well they are rather expensive. My recommendation for tourists in a hurry is Yomogida Soba in Ginza and Sagatani in Shibuya. Both shops are extremely delicious and cheap like a burger shop, but they make their noodles in-house. They are chain restaurants, but much, much better than other chains, such as Fuji Soba and Yudetaro, which are actually quite good for the price.

Both Yomogida in Ginza and Sagatani in Shibuya are also extremely small and packed all the time. So I guarantee that you’ll have delicious traditional Japanese noodle while having fun squeezing yourself among Japanese locals!

Where to eat udon

The same deal with soba – you eat in a proper shop, udon is rather expensive. If you are on a budget, try udon chain restaurant Marugame Seimen. But actually, udon culture is really interesting as there are many different types of udon being offered in different prefectures in Japan. My personal preference is udon produced in Saitama Prefecture. It’s a trivia no one in Japan cares (lol), but Saitama produces the largest amount of flour and guess how udon is made;-)

If you are really into udon, and have one day free in Tokyo, try Udon Kichi in Saitama. Their udon is out of this world.

Winter is coming to Japan. If you are visiting right now, you’ll see a lot of Japanese wearing a surgical face mask. Three main reasons for a face mask are:

  1. they are sick and don’t want to spread germs.
  2. they don’t want to catch germs from others, and
  3. they are concerned with air pollution (although Japan’s pollution level is very low).

When I was growing up in Yokohama in the 70s, we’d wear a mask only when we were sick.

Face masks are just one of the many modern day Japanese culture that you’ll see and experience during your visit. You might have read about various traditional culture and customs in Japan, such as kimono, sushi, sake, sumo, kabuki, etc, but you’ll also enjoy experiencing everyday modern day Japanese culture as you walk on the street, take trains and eat at restaurants here in Japan.

I’ve picked three key modern day Japanese culture that I myself find amazing. I am a native Japanese, but I continue to be amazed by things that Japanese do in public space.

No.1 Quietness

Japan is a quiet place. Of course it’s all relative, but when I come back to Tokyo from overseas, Narita/Haneda airports are so quiet, and so are trains and busses. If you close your eyes on the public transport in Japan, you start thinking that you are at home, with all gadgets turned off. Even in cafes and restaurants, you’ll hardly see Japanese talking too loud.

Half way to 100 years old, I love living in soundless Japan. At the same time, it is peculiar that nowadays the sound of children playing is considered as noise pollution in this country. Apparently there were some plans to build much-needed kindergartens, but residents nearby opposed to the plans and the projects got cancelled.

Bowing in Japan politeness

No.2 Cleanness

Japan is known for its cleanness. Japanese cities are often spotless clean and it’s one of the worst social crimes to litter in this country. You won’t find many rubbish bins in public space, such as train stations and on the street. You are expected to take any rubbish home or back to your hotel room.

In the 60s and 70s, however, many Japanese people were dumping rubbish on the street. I remember seeing car drivers clearing cigarette butts out of car window. Air in Tokyo and Yokohama were extremely polluted back then. 50 years on, Japan is an extremely clean country. Japan is a good example that cleanness can be taught.

No.3 Aging

How people think of ‘aging’ affects the way they live and do things. And in Japan, a society that is rapidly aging, elderly people seem to be quite energetic and taking extremely good care of themselves. This is no wonder – Japanese boast the longest life expectancy in the world. They are living longer and longer, and today, a ‘100 year life’ is one of the most trending buzz words today. Health related products are selling like hotcakes, and the pet industry is extremely lucrative many thanks to the aging population who pour money and time into caring their dogs and cats.

When you visit outside Tokyo and Osaka, you’ll be amazed by what has become a typical sight – you’ll see a lot of elderly people there, but not many young people or children. While there is a lot to celebrate about elderly people enjoying their longer life expectancy, a childless society is probably one of the most upsetting modern day Japanese culture.

No 1. Sentaro’s Monaka at Shinjuku Isetan

Things to buy in Japan

Monaka at Shinjuku Isetan

Shinjuku Isetan is the flagship and largest Isetan Department Store. The best part of this amazing place is the basement food hall or endearingly called “Depachika (Depa = Department; Chika = Basement)” among Japanese. No matter how many times we visit Shinjuku Isetan Depachika, we still get mesmerized. We are also literary lost in terms of where things are and what to buy in Japan as it’s a huge place full of great stuff.  But what we always manage to buy is Japanese sweets that are hard to get elsewhere, including our No. 1 recommendation, Sentaro’s monaka (最中).

What to buy in Japan

Sentaro’s monaka (最中)

Monaka is a Japanese traditional sweet made from azuki bean paste sandwiched between thin crispy wafers. While monaka is normally around 150 yen at regular shops, Sentaro’s monaka is priced at 260 yen. Still, you’ll most likely have to wait in a long queue at Sentaro’s shop in the basement it’s that good. Try one and discover the art of monaka!

One of the most common comments I’ve seen at major online shops is, “I trust anything that is made in Japan, including stuff for babies.” The quality of Japanese products already has a solid international reputation, but only people in the know go for Best Japanese Baby Products Made in Japan.

For instance, Pigeon’s nasal aspirator vacuum suction for newborn baby has a cult following online. It is uniquely designed to prevent liquid from entering into a user’s mouth, and apparently works like a charm, and no other vacuum suction works the way Pigeon’s does.

This has to do with the fact that Japanese company heavily focus on research and development and take pride in producing high quality, well-thought-out design Japanese baby products.

It is natural to want best products for your babies. Here are some of the best selling items for babies loved by mothers and fathers in Japan.

1. Nasal Aspirator Vacuum Suction

It is a super popular product and the reason is clear – it’s so well designed. Pigeon’s vacuum suction was developed in collaboration with otorhinolaryngologists. The tilted nozzle makes suction easy from any angle. The single tube also makes suction easy and effective. This vacuum suction is designed to stop liquid from entering user’s mouth. Established in 1957, Pigeon is one of the largest and most trusted baby products companies in Japan.

5. Baby Nipple Cleansing Brush

Again, there are many types of nipple brushes, but Pigeon’s brush has been one of the best selling products at many online stores. One of the reviewers says, “Through various baby showers we received several different types of nipple brushes. This one by far works the best. A lot of nipple brushes are simply small wire brushes that end in either sharp wire or bent wire. They don’t end with an actual cleaning surface like this does. I wouldn’t look any further than these brushes. I wholeheartedly recommend them.”

Hi everyone! I’m Kyoko, a shopping concierge at Takaski’s online shop. I’m the one who communicates with you on our live chat as well as through emails. I’ve been asked to list top 5 everyday Japanese products Takaski staff recommendation. Japanese products are increasingly popular overseas, but many of you out there maybe thinking, “are they all good?”

Well, the answer is “no.” Some things are not necessarily good just because they are made in Japan. So it’s important that you learn which ones are good to buy! All Takaski staff make a point in buying made in Japan products and use them in their everyday life so that we can inform our customers better.

In our blog site “Blogski”, I’ll try to make personal recommendations based on my own experience as well as other staff and my family. And we promise we’ll be honest:-)

So without further ado, here is September 2016 top five!

No.1 FEATHER Samurai Edge Razor Blade Holder

FEATHER Samurai Edge Razor Blade HolderFEATHER Samurai Edge Razor Blade HolderObviously I don’t use it personally, but it comes from my husband. He recently bought a Feather Samurai Edge, and he’s been enormously taken by the product. Everytime he shaves with Samurai Edge, he asks me to touch his jaw, saying “You feel how smooth it is?” It gets rather repetitive, but he’s still at the honeymoon stage.

The only problem, though, is that it’s really, really sharp that he needs some getting used to. His previous blade wasn’t sharp at all, so he used to press the blade hard against his skin when he was shaving. He still has that habit, but you can’t do that with Samurai Edge Razor. As a result, he cuts himself almost every time he shaves, bleeding like mad, particularly around his adam’s apple…

Recently our SNS Team has put a caution out on our Facebook that Samurai Edge Razor needs to be handled with care. This product is the best news for those with thick beard;-)

No. 2 Bath Roman Bath Salts Powder SkinCare Milk Protein

EARTH Bath Roman Bath Salts Powder - Milk Protein 680g

I’ve never been a big fan of bath salts, but Eearth’s Bath Roman Bath Salts Powder SkinCare Milk Protein changed my whole daily routine. Now I have a bath twice a day because it’s that good!

Sprinkle a few spoonful of SkinCare Milk Protein into the bath and it will turn your regular bath into a gorgeous white milk bath in a second. Visual has a lot of positive effect on your mind. I feel immediately calm as soon as I see white, milky water in the bathroom.

Then the smell. It is so beautiful and calming. It lasts on my skin for hours. My husband particularly loves the smell, as he’s always worried about his body smell particularly in summer.

As soon as I dip in, I can feel my skin immediately feeling smooth, which also lasts for a long time. I love the way my skin feels in the morning, which has made me addicted to this product. With SkinCare Milk Protein, I wake up better and sleep better.

No. 3 HIRO Enzyme Aojiru with Matcha Organic & High Fiber

HIRO Enzyme Aojiru with Matcha Organic & High Fiber - 3g x 44 Sticks

I’ve tried a few different kinds of aojiru to date (including the most popular ones), but I find Hiro Enzyme Aojiru easiest to drink. Aojiru is something you have to take everyday, so if it’s too bitter or too strong, it’ll become hard to continue.

This product has a mild matcha flavour which makes it really easy to consum. I usually have it with milk (not non-fat) and it’s quite delicious.

Aojiru is believed to improve skin condition, reduce weight as well as combat against balding. The best benefit I draw from aojiru is that it keeps me and my husband very, very regular, so regular that we always feel light (if not empty) in stomach.

No. 4  SHISEIDO The Collagen Tablet

SHISEIDO The Collagen Smoothie

Shiseido the Collagen has been one of the best selling products at Takaski.com. I’d never had collagen before, but I thought why not. I just wanted to know why this collagen is so popular, but never really believed it’d do anything so significant on my skin.

Three days after I began taking it, I could tell that my skin felt softer and smoother. In particular, I feel my hands feel so much softer. Now, my morning routine includes the Hiro Enzyme Aojiru, followed by Shiseido the Collagen!

No. 5 YAMASA Fresh to the Last Drop Shoyu Soy Sauce Reduced Salt

YAMASA Fresh to the End Shoyu - 50% Reduced Salt Soy Sauce

I’m not a big fan of ‘reduced’ products (like reduced salt, reduced fat, etc), but this one is different. It has an elegant taste and you’ll never notice that salt is 50% reduced.

And what makes this product a work of genius is its package. Normally, soy sauce gets really thick as it’s exposed to air for a long time. Last one third of soy sauce gets really dark and becomes too salty to enjoy food with.

Thanks to its smart package, Yamasa’s Fresh Drop series doesn’t get dark or too strong for 180 days. The mouth of the package shuts after you pour, so soy sauce is not exposed to air. As the name suggests, it’s delicious and fresh to the last drop!

This is the best option for those looking for reduced salt soy sauce but not wanting to compromise quality. Life’s too short to have bad soy sauce.

With these top 5 everyday Japanese products, our day at home is like this: when I wake up, I take Hiro Aojiru and Shiseido the Collagen in my pajamas. Then I take bath with SkinCare Milk Protein Bath Salt, while my husband starts shaving (and bleeding) with his Samurai Edge Blade. We eat healthily all day with YAMASA Fresh to the Last Drop Shoyu Soy Sauce Reduced Salt. We highly recommend them all!

The post Lose Weight by Eating Best Japanese Ramen and Donuts after New Year appeared first on TAKASKI.COM.

After many Christmas and New Year lunches and dinners, many of us are feeling a bit heavier, aren’t we? In Japan, weight gain is a common new year problem, too, particularly thanks to these delicious mochi rice cakes that keep popping up on the dinner table:-( It’s around this time of the new year that we start pledging to lose that extra kilos we’ve put on in a matter of few weeks in December and January. Lose Weight by Eating Japanese Ramen and Donuts after New Year!

But it’s never that easy, is it? Yes, we hear you!

How about try a Japanese solution to losing weight? Starving ourselves is not sustainable way, but eating and drinking WELL is. Here are some Japanese food, drinks and supplements that are helping Japanese lose weight healthily and in a fun way:-)

Okara Soy Powder

One of Takaski’s staff (known as Kyoko among our customers) swears that she’s lost six kilos in three months and yet feels healthy largely thanks to eating okara (and konjac and aojiru) on a daily basis. What’s okara anyway? According to Wikipedia, okara, soy pulp, or tofu dregs is “a pulp consisting of insoluble parts of the soybean which remains after pureed soybeans are filtered in the production of soy milk and tofu”.

As it is, okara is super healthy and delicious, and the only downside of okara is gassiness that it gives you;-)

You can make all sorts of dishes with okara, while you can also substitute flour with okara in cooking. Or simply reduce the amount of your regular dish and add some okara powder into it, which fills you up a lot.

Konjac Ramen

Big fan of ramen? But fully aware that ramen has high calorie? The most fattening ramen is ramen with tonkotsu pork-based soup, which contains anywhere between 990 to over 1,500 calories. Ippudo’s Tokusei Akamaru Tonkotsu Ramen, for example, is 948 calories and Ramen Jiro’s whopping 1300 to 3000 calories…

DHC, one of the most successful beauty and health food companies, comes to rescue us who are obsessed with ramen!

DHC Japanese Diet Konjac Ramen Noodles 65kcal - Tonkotsu Pork Taste 140g x 6pcs DHC tonkotsu DHC Japanese Diet Konjac Ramen Noodles - Shoyu Soy Sauce 140g x 12pcs DHC Japanese Diet Konjac Ramen Noodles DHC Japanese Diet Konjac Ramen Noodles 83kcal - Shio Salt 140g x 6pcs DHC Japanese Diet Konjac Ramen Noodles 83kcal

DHC’s Diet Ramen Series’ noodles are made with konjac, which is a plant of the genus Amorphophallus. Konjac is also known as konjak, konjaku, konnyaku potato, devil’s tongue, voodoo lily, snake palm, or elephant yam, and used in many famous Japanese dishes such as oden, nabe hot pot, nimono stew and more.

Konjac is part and parcel of Japanese washoku, and its popularity largely owes to the fact that it’s a low calorie – good for diet – and healthy – it cleanses your system, making you regular!

As you can see above, even Tonkotsu Ramen has only 83 calories, followed by 68 calorie Shoyu Soy Sauce Ramen and 83 calorie Shio Salt Ramen. DHC Konjac Ramen is the new girl’s best friend;-)

Diet Sweet Snack

If you suppress your desire to eat sweet stuff too long, you might be facing the pig-out urge sometime soon. That’s something we should avoid by eating ‘healthy’, less fattening sweets. There is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself every now and then with some sweets, and if these sweets are healthy, then, that’s even better and helps to lose weight by eating Japanese ramen and donuts after new year!

We highly recommend snack and sweets that are made with tofu and soy.

ISHIKAWA Tofu Donut Vanilla 4pcs Made by Traditional Tofu Master ISHIKAWA Tofu Donut Coco 4pcs Made by Traditional Tofu Master ISHIKAWA Soy Donut Tea Flavour 4pcs

Tofu, soy and okara donuts by Ishikawa are made with 100% Japanese soy beans and with flour harvested in Aichi Prefecture. These tofu, okara or soy donuts are actually our favourite afternoon tea snack at Takaski.com (many of Takaski’s staff have indeed pleadged losing 5 kilos by June this year!).

If you are a creative type, why not try making your own healthy non-fatening deserte with Okara Donut to Grill in Toaster – 100% Japanese Soy Okara. As the name suggests, you grill this donut on a toaster for two minutes. While you can eat them as they are, you could also create:

  1. Okara Donut with custard cream: Grill the donut for two minutes, add custard cream and brown sugar and place a heated spoon on the surface of the donut
  2. Okara Donut French Toast: Mix milk and egg (add sugar as prefered), cut the donut in halves and dunk them in the mixed milk and egg. Grill the donuts on a frying pan and have it with whipped cream and some fruit!
  3. Okara Donut with banana, marshmallow and almond: Place sliced banana, marshmallow and almond on a donut and grill it for two minutes. Add chocolate sauce or any of your favoriet sauce.

Aojiru Diet Drinks

Aojiru initially became popular as drinks that provides condensed nutrition. But recent years have seen an increased number of Japanese aojiru fans who consume aojiru for diet purposes. Why? When we are on a diet, we tend to lack fiber and vitamin, but Aojiru contains these and more nutritious ingredients that get rid of constipation and swelling, and that has detoxifying effects which helps to lose weight by eating Japanese ramen and donuts after new year!

HIRO Enzyme Aojiru with Matcha Organic & High Fiber - 3g x 44 Sticks Kyushu Barley Grass with Kyoto Uji Matcha Gyokuro - 3g x 30 Sticks FANCL 100% Japanese Kale Aojiru Basics - 30 Sticks Japanese Christmas Gifts Kale powder drink 44 FANCL 100% Japanese Kale Aojiru Basics - 10 Sticks

For instance, while dieting, you could substitute one meal with one cup of aojiru (for a limited number of days).

In addition to dieting effect, aojiru also has many other positive effects. For instance, kale and omugi wakaga aojiru is said to have an anti-aging effect, while ashitaba and omugi wakaga has fat burning effect.

But keep in mind that you won’t lose weight overnight by just taking one or two glasses of aojiru. Aojiru needs to be consumed everyday for a while before you start to feel the benefit of it. So find the taste or product that is not difficult to take on a daily basis. For instance, aojiru with matcha is much easier to drink everyday than some hard core aojiru.

Japanese Diet Supplements

Everyone knows that we shouldn’t eat big meals at night. Consumed food stay in our system overnight, keep taxing our stomach and turning into fat. But sometimes we can’t avoid eating (a lot) at night if you are at a dinner party. The more friends or business associates you have, the more dinner parties you are bound to have to attend. Or simply, you like eating at night, which is not a sin itself;-)

For those who have to or want to eat at night is Shinya Koso Late Night Meal Diet Series. Designed by Dr. Hiromi Shintani, Late Night Meal Diet Series contain eight ingredients that help you control weight. If you are aiming at losing weight AND improving skin condition, SHINYA KOSO Late Night Meal Diet & Beauty – Enzyme, Placenta & Collagen is the answer!

The post Busting Obesity – Japan’s Easy Access to Best Healthy Food and Drinks appeared first on TAKASKI.COM.

It’s official – Japanese are super healthy. According to WHO, only 3.6 percent of Japanese adults have a body mass index (BMI) over 30. It is the international standard for obesity, while 32.0 percent of Americans do.

If you have spent some time here in Japan, you realize that it’s the combination of what kind of food and drinks are consumed in Japan. And the availability of diverse healthy food choices.

Just like in many countries

Japan is a home to many fast food restaurants. Usual suspects, MCdonalds and KFC, are thriving in Japan and Japanese traditional fatty foods, such as tonkatsu, ramen and okonomiyaki. They have been part and parcel of Japanese culinary culture.

But in addition to such fatty food choice, there are equally a great number of healthy food choices, even at fast food restaurants.

For example, if you are opting for a cheap, but healthy breakfast, you can just pop into Yoshinoya or Matsuya. Their main dish is the famous gyudon or beef and rice bowl. They also serve reasonably priced breakfast sets. For example, US$3 fish breakfast set comes with a bowl of rice, a piece of grilled salmon, pickles and some green vegetables.

Japanese convenience stores

Even Japanese convenience stores are also full of healthy food choices. In addition to usual greasy food of fried chicken and french fries, they also have a variety of salads, rice balls, and balanced sandwiches. All of them have a label indicating how many calories each item is.

Japanese pubs are greatly different from pubs overseas. They offer a wide range of healthy food and snacks for drinkers, including edamame, salads, grilled fish and sashimi. So obviously, the key to tackle obesity is clearly tied with the availability of diverse healthy food choices.

Japanese drinks with no sugar

Also, Japanese consume a lot of drinks that do not have any sugar in them. While Coke and other types of sugary drinks are available and popular in Japan, like food. There is equally a large variety of non-sugar drinks, and the most popular is perhaps Japanese tea.

Hundreds of thousands of convenience and drug stores to 5.52 million vending machines, you’ll always find healthy drink choices right next to less healthy ones. The key is again diversity of drinks and their availability.

But Japanese are also obsessed with sweets and snacks, too. In fact, Japan is a home to snack giants such as Glico, Meiji, Morinaga, Calbee and Kracie. Their products are not only popular in Japan. Also overseas, and there seems to be one success factor that stands out. Their sweet products are not that sweet compared to local snacks in other countries.

Japanese healthy snacks

Also, there is an emergence of ‘healthy’ snacks, which carry less calories and have a higher nutritive value. Like Japanese manga is often written for adult audience. Many of Japanese snacks are targeted at health-conscious adults.

If you are looking for healthy snack choices, Takaski has a wide range of such products available for you. Surround yourself with wisely chosen food and drinks and enjoy the benefit of Japanese lifestyle of being healthy and below BMI 30!
